Chapter Ten

Fender was one of the first in the club, but his status meant nothing to Sal. Eight took him inside of the RV while the others milled around outside. “This is serious. After you, he’s coming for the rest of us. He won’t be happy unless the votes are unanimous on his side, and he’s got deals cooking that he knows we’ll vote down. The officers will not let him drag this club into the dirt. We’re not a fucking street gang. We have families, kids, hermano.”

Eight had seen this coming, but thought he had more time. “So? What can I do? I don’t get the witness, he kills me. I do, and the cops will get me, or he kills me. How the fuck can I do this? I got shit to live for now. I have…I have someone.”

“I heard. So, we help each other.”

Eight got up and paced a little. “I want out. He knows it. He says if I do this I can get out.”

Fender didn’t seem fazed. “That’s against the rules.”

“I know.”

Fender sat back on the couch and eyed him. “So, if we get him and his captains out, is that your payment? Free and clear?”

“How is me killing that witness taking the gavel from Sal? It’ll be helping him, not hurting him.”

Fender looked him dead in the eye and said, “While you have him all nice and confident, we move in and kill the fucker. Don’t sweat the details, hermano. We’ll cover that. Can’t be talking about something so serious to someone who isn’t in the club anymore. I wouldn’t suggest you leave town until we do, though. They’ll be watching you.”

Eight saw it on his face, it was true, but with this one act, no matter what Sal had planned for him, he’d be free. “Gracias, mi hermano.”

“You’re welcome.”

Formulating a plan quickly, he was relieved he wouldn’t have to try to do all of it alone. That was the biggest obstacle, but if Fender agreed to help… “So, while we are still brothers, I have a favor. I need a distraction.”

The next morning his mother came, and he pulled her inside quickly. “Mijo, what the hell happened to the yard? All those butts and beer cans.”

He smiled and pulled her to the sofa, making her sit. “Mom, you have to get out of town. Go to your cousin Lucille’s in L.A.”

She wasn’t shocked or scared for herself. “What did you do?”

“Nothing yet, but I’m about to try to get out of the club. In case it goes bad, I want to make sure you’re safe.”

“Oh, honey, thank God! I’ll go, I’ll go tonight. Are you…are you going to be with your guy?”

He couldn’t help but smile at that. “I am, Mom. I am.”

“Mijo, I’m so happy!”

“Figured you would be.”

As soon as she left an hour later, promising to call the moment she got on the plane, he called Kale. His chiquito was not happy. “I haven’t heard from you in days. I don’t matter anymore?”

Eight wasn’t about to explain himself.
